Tidal turbines installed in Pentland Firth, Scotland, set a new world record for tidal stream generation output in August, according to Atlantis Resources.
The firm said the third of the four turbines involved in the 6MW MeyGen project was successfully reinstalled during August neap tide this week.
Atlantis added that the 700MWh generated during August is a world record for a tidal stream power station. With the third Andritz Hydro Hammerfest (AAH) turbine now installed, the firm expects to set new generation records each month.
The first phase of the 6MW MayGen project uses two different turbine designs, three AAH turbines and one of its own designs.
Due to delayed components, the fourth Atlantis turbine will not be installed until the next neap tide at the end of September, but the company is confident that MayGen Phase1A will then be operating at full 6MW capacity. The Atlantis turbine will then undergo final performance and reliability tests before being signed off for long-term operation.
“The production performance from the installed turbines on the MeyGen project has been very good,” said David Taaffe, director of project delivery at MeyGen.
“August proved to be a world record month, providing enough energy to power 2,000 Scottish homes from just two turbines. With yet another successful installation campaign expertly completed this week by the Atlantis operations team, we expect to continue to break records throughout the rest of the year generating both predictable power and revenue.”
Earlier this year the MeyGen project was accredited by Ofgem to receive 5 Renewables Obligation Certificates (Rocs) per MWh.
