Hydrogen Vehicle Systems (HVS) has signed an agreement to supply 30 of its hydrogen fuel cell electric tractor units to Explore Plant & Transport Solutions.

The vehicles will be supported by a service and maintenance plan, full training on the safe use of hydrogen, refuelling and driver training, and a hydrogen fuelling infrastructure that fully meets the needs of its operation.

Founded in 2015, Explore is a specialist supplier of transport and plant hire services to a diverse range of industry sectors including aerospace, construction, rail and nuclear.

According to HVS – the UK’s first hydrogen fuel cell truck manufacturer – its Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV), delivers superior efficiency, outstanding performance, and a reduced environmental impact by offering heavier payloads, longer range and faster refuelling compared to battery electric alternatives.

Chris Gatheridge, Operations Director for Explore said, “It is our firm belief that Hydrogen-electric fuel cell vehicles are set to revolutionise the long-haul and meet the heavy demands of the construction logistics sector, providing a clean alternative to traditional diesel engines.

“These new HVS units will significantly reduce Explore’s carbon footprint, and this Agreement underscores our commitment to advancing green technology within our business.”

John McLeister, Chief Commercial Officer for HVS, said, “Our innovative, zero-emission fuel cell technology provides fleet operators with the heavier payloads, longer range and faster refuelling required of modern logistics operations seeking to decarbonise their fleets.

“We are looking forward to working with Chris and his team as we both aim to lead the logistics industry in sustainability.”

HVS (Hydrogen Vehicle Systems), has begun building prototype hydrogen powered trucks at a specialist build facility in Silverstone, Northamptonshire.

The company has completed the initial build of the first of the prototype rigs at the 18,000 sq. ft Fablink facility, which will shortly be despatched to UTAC, Leyland for the initial rig testing.

Several other Attribute Prototype (AP) vehicles are also currently being built at the site.

Each unit will be used to test specific attributes of the truck design, from strength and durability to the range and efficiency of the vehicle ahead of series production which is due to start mid-decade.

The Silverstone facility offers HVS complete build capabilities encompassing quality assurance, logistics, a toolroom and office amenities.

HVS and Fablink are embarking on a long-term partnership, with Fablink providing the manufacturing of cab structures, chassis, power towers and providing assembly services.

The build is underway with additional support of manufacturing service partners HSSMI.

Lisa-Marie Cunningham, HVS Interim Chief Operating Officer, said, “We have embarked on another exciting new chapter for HVS. The Fablink team and facility provides us with the space, all the equipment and expertise essential for our build operations.

“This next project phase in Silverstone, home of automotive excellence, combined with the support of our exceptional team and manufacturing partners, positions us perfectly to successfully deliver our prototype programme.”

Lindsay Watson, Fablink Chief Technical Officer, said, “Fablink prides itself in offering a depth of engineering and technical capability alongside strong competencies in design, tooling and prototyping.

“It is therefore a pleasure to be working with HVS on this landmark build project where we can share engineering excellence.”
