BP is to buy EV charging network Chargemaster and plans to rollout rapid charging stations at its forecourts and elsewhere across the UK.
The firm claims the 150kW chargers will provide around 100 miles range in 10 minutes.
BP estimates that there will be 12 million electric cars on UK roads by 2040.
Downstream chief executive Tufan Erginbilgic said BP plans to be the number one provider of energy to low carbon vehicles, “on the road or at home”.
Chargemaster operates some 6,500 charging points across the country. It will be rebranded to BP Chargemaster.
